Julie Janata is an Emmy Award-winning producer, an editor and director of feature films and character-driven verite documentaries. Fusing her experience from cinematography through marketing and editing to producing, Julie is developing feature films to direct.
Five films she has produced or edited have been acquired by Showtime, three by PBS, in addition to worldwide theatrical and television distribution.
She is a story builder, sculpting character-driven narrative and documentary features that have garnered critical acclaim and more than 20 awards around the world, including Emmy nominations, Audience Awards, the FIPRESCI International Critic’s Prize and an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Her films have been honored with a MacArthur Foundation grant and screened by special invitation of the United Nations, U.S. Senate, Democratic National Convention, and the U.S. State Department’s international American Film Showcase.
Julie was trained by Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmakers on productions in the U.S., Europe, New Zealand and Africa. She has worked for every major studio - Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal, Fox, Sony and Disney - as well as ABC, CBS, PBS, HBO and ESPN. Steeped in story as an avid reader from childhood, she started her career in high school as a camera operator, became Assistant Promotion Director of an ABC TV station in college, which spurred her to come to Hollywood as an American Film Institute Cinematography Fellow. Later she trained in directing actors with Adrienne Weiss.
A member of the Producers Guild and Editors Guild, Julie is committed to diversity in media, volunteering as Co-Chair of the Producers Guild Diversity Committee, a member of the Producers Guild Women's Impact Network, and President Emeritus of Alliance of Women Directors.
