Kalia Maliali is a consistent enquirer and information enthusiast, she usually enjoys the experience in situations that cannot be explained and resolved effortlessly and therefore she involves herself in vibrant labyrinths for long distant wandering. She has been peripatetic since her very young age where she also found out that beside human beings there are also animals, plants and objects which became her obsession at the time. Animals, plants and objects have somehow been inspirational inside her artistic process that led her through some kind of fictional and ontological inquiries. Kalia also writes usually in forms of fictional narrative and poetry.
She also studied BFA- Dance and Tutoring in Athens (2008) and MFA in Choreography and Performance at Roehampton University of London (2011). Her graduate studies have been funded by the National State foundation of Greece as the 2nd elective young dancer for foreign studies in 2009. Her work has been featured in Cyprus, Athens, London, Edinburgh and Berlin in various performance settings, including choreographic projects, site specific work, video installations, films, lectures etc. Kalia’s work is varied; shifting from dance base to performance, visual art and fiction; her interest in art mostly concerns any possible performative act that can get involved to develop a present communicative situation between the space, the art object, the performer and the viewer. She also teaches contemporary dance usually shaped in guided improvisations, creative movement, somatic practices and technique. At moment she lives and works in Berlin and Cyprus.
