Kathleen Dyer has choreographed extensively for the past sixteen years, creating thirty-two repertory works and four powerful evening-length pieces for her company K D N Y. Dyer has also created several works for university dance programs and other dance companies. Her energetic and technically specific work explores dance’s capacity to communicate both literal and metaphoric meanings simultaneously, making Dyer's work accessible to dance aficionados and mainstream audiences.
Dyer began her dance career in Alabama where she danced for the Huntsville Community Ballet and the School for the Performing Arts. She attended Florida State University in Tallahassee via scholarship, earning her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance. After graduation, Dyer danced with several New York dance companies, including Nikolais Louis, while actively pursuing her own choreography. Her works have been restaged on regional companies around the country including the Huntsville Ballet of Alabama, Moving Current of Tampa, FL and CORE of Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, she is collaborating with artists in Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Washington to create new site-specific renditions of her popular work Navigating the Hallway.
Over the past decade, Dyer’s work has received a number of accolades including critical notice by the press and selection for presentation by prestigious performing arts festivals. In addition to its annual New York Season, K D N Y has performed at Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts, the New York International Fringe Festival, the Fringe Festival of Independent Artists in Canada, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Dyer's creative accomplishments have been acknowledged with Artist Fellowships from the Connecticut Commission of the Arts and Choreography Awards from the Panoply Festival of the Arts in Alabama. Additionally, she has been invited to participate in several touring exchanges and collaborations with national companies.
