  I agree with Kerry - the HV20 may be marketed at consumers, but the featureset and the problems are definitely more suited towards pro-am filmmakers than average "birthday party" folks. The image quality is astounding, and the 25PF mode is great, but this isn't a cam you can just take out and start filming with.

  The current popular opinion is that HDD/AVCHD recorders are currently inferior in image quality to tape recorders. This will change in the next year or two, but right now, your best bet would be getting a HV20 or HV30. If it has to be tapeless, take a look at the HF10 Take a look at this site for image quality comparison: http://canoncamerabuzz.com/2008/03/17/comparing-the-hd-trinity-hv20-hg10-hf10/ A word of warning: The manual focus on all the current Canon prosumer HD cams is somewhat annoying - you have a tiny wheel left to the lens that's not easy to move without shaking the camera. There's a focus support mode that makes things easier, but if you plan on using manual focus a lot while moving the cam, but it's still far from perfect.

  I an only second how important lighting is - and it can be done on the cheap. Go to your local hardware/home improvement store and get some of those: http://foto.dirkhennig.de/img/baustrahler-300.JPG (I don't know how those things are called in English, hence the picture) - you get a strong, neutral light that comes on a tripod for a few bucks. Adding light to a scene not only saves your film from looking like crap, it adds a whole new layer of visual possibilities. Second, get a good microphone. Never use the built-in mic your cam has, especially if you shoot on tape. Also, get a boom or some other way to get the microphone to where the audio you want to record actually happens. And most importantly, keep on filming!

  I faced the same dilemma half a year ago - back then it was HV20 vs. HG10. After a lifetime of thinking, I chose the HV20 for the slightly better video quality and easier editing. Yes, one day the tape head will die, but by that time, I'm pretty sure tapes will be a thing of the past anyway. Most important thing about the HV20 (and any camcorder-sized camera): forget about the internal mic - the tape noise is horrible. get a good external microphone, a boom and someone to hold all that suff, and you're set.
