Born in Hollywood and raised in Atlanta, Antonio “Kid” Curry did not realize that he had a gift. A gift nestled safely behind a camera lens. In 1993, during his junior year as finance major at Tuskegee University, he wrote, produced, and directed a short film on drug usage among college students for his roommate. “Everybody was floored when he turned in the project. From that point on, I knew directing was my calling.”
Another confirmation came later that summer when he completed his first script titled “Wrong Place, Wrong Time”. Writing the script took the place of sleep. The characters were formed, the plot was constructed and a self-proclaimed “enduring” director was born. In 1995, he formed KIDCURRY Filmworks and began his plight to produce quality films.
With a free and nurturing technique, Curry envisions and develops his films, allowing each piece to grow into its own being. “A excellent film has substance, distinctive emotional elements and powerful characters played by equally powerful actors”. A student of history, Curry’s films possess intriguing topics coupled with profound emotional values. ‘Forgotten Son’ follows a man in his darkest hour conversing with God about the trials and tribulations that he has experienced in his life. ‘How the Healing Begins’ explores the minds of four women in a therapy group, all dealing with different tragedies in life. After many sessions of sharing their stories, they discover that the healing begins from within. His most spiritual film is ‘If By Chance’. This piece of art is about a silent restaurant owner who helps the needy in order to restore himself with God. “This film is a compelling story with great characters. The talented actors I worked with did an exceptional job bringing them to life”. The most successful and memorable film is ‘Love Thy Neighbor’, the examination of when an idle mind becomes the devils playground. A story of how a man with devious gravitations becomes fixated on his surroundings. Sexual thoughts lead him to study the lives of the women in his apartment complex.
Citing Steven Spielberg as one of his many influences, Curry studied the paths of many great directors and made a blueprint for himself. “Spielberg created a body of work that was never formulated and will probably never be”. Formulating the unknown is exactly was Curry does. He captures the stills and puts them into motion. He conquers the feeling that brings reality to art. He has the willingness to follow the path that God has set for him, a path less traveled. Only the ones with special gifts are invited. Welcome Antonio “Kid” Curry to this land, a place where directing and writing give birth to unprecedented vision.
