Mackie graduated with a degree in Communication Arts from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2006, where he took classes under directors Marilou Diaz-Abaya and Quark Henares. He was an active member in the Loyola Film Circle, the university's student film organization.

In 2007, while taking film studies in Cebu, he apprenticed under Diego Llanos-Romero, a Spanish cinematographer.

He formed sporkFORshort productions in college with his coursemates. He is currently one of their in-house cinematographers.

He has worked on numerous music videos for many of the country's top musicians. He is also affiliated with pelicola.tv, the Philippines' first internet television website that broadcasts on true HD. His first feature film, Mangatyanan, an official entry to the 2009 Cinemalaya Film Festival has just finished production.
