Mark Burleson Bio
Mark Burleson received an MFA from the Mills College in 1994 and a BFA from Tufts University & The School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston in 1992. He joined the Faculty of the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University in 2004, where he is currently a professor and ceramics area coordinator. His studio Atlanta. Before coming to GSU, he was an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the Director of Odyssey Center for the Ceramic Arts in Asheville, NC for quite a few years. He has taught at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Aspen, CO, Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC, Santa Fe Clay, in Santa Fe, NM and has been a visiting artist at many schools nationwide.
Mark has been featured in numerous Solo and Group Exhibitions in galleries and museums across the country Including the cities of Atlanta, Asheville, Aspen, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Charlotte, Detroit, Oakland, San Francisco, Sonoma and many other locations.
Mark has authored an award winning book, “The Ceramic Glaze Handbook”, published by Sterling Publishing of New York in 2001 The book was awarded the Mary Ellen Lopreseti Award for Excellence in Art Publishing by the Art Libraries Society of North America. He has also authored several magazine articles and includes articles for American Craft Magazine, Ceramics, Art + Perception and Clay Times Magazine, and his work has appeared in numerous books and other publications.
Additionally, Burleson has curated more than a dozen exhibitions including the “NCECA National Clay Invitational” at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery in Asheville, NC. He work has been cited in many publications including Ceramics Monthly Magazine, American Craft Magazine, Southern Voice, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution and the Boston Globe.
