Matt Thunell is an executive producer with over 12 years of experience working at prominent creative studios and visual effects facilities.
While studying rhetoric and film at UC Berkeley, Thunell started his career as an intern at Lucasfilm. The film archive at Skywalker Ranch became his new school, where he absorbed hundreds of hours of behind-the-scenes Star Wars footage. After banging on the doors of Industrial Light & Magic for months, he was hired as a visual effects production assistant for Terminator 3 and Hulk.
Leveraging what he learned about computer graphics and post production at ILM, Thunell crossed the Golden Gate to coordinate visual effects at The Orphanage. The studio soon grew from 20 people to 100, and he cut his teeth along the way on high-profile features and brands such as Superman Returns, Hellboy, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Sony Playstation 2, and Disney.
Thunell joined Radium in 2006 to produce visual effects, animation, design, and editorial. Reel FX's acquisition of Radium in 2007 further diversified the studio, and he branched out to special attractions and interactive media. Key projects, brands, and clients included: Audi, Ferrari, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Target, Apocalypto, RED, Droga5, Leo Burnett, Radical Media, DreamWorks, Dave Meyers, and Matthew Rolston. In addition to producing, Thunell managed the Production staff at Radium's Santa Monica studio.
In June 2011, Thunell went to creative powerhouse Motion Theory/Mirada, "a storytelling engine in the form of a company" (Guillermo Del Toro, Partner). Most notably he produced the Jon Favreau directed commercial for Wrigley 5 Gum (Energy BBDO), featuring renowned parkour athlete Daniel Ilabaca and a fully CG, interactive environment. He worked closely with directors and creative executives such as Mathew Cullen, Javier Jimenez, John Fragomeni, Jeff Scruton, and Grady Hall.
In April 2012, Thunell became the Executive Producer of Carbon VFX in Santa Monica, a bi-coastal creative studio specializing in high-end visual effects, design, color, and finishing -- strategically aligned with Whitehouse Post, Gentleman Scholar, and Cap Gun Collective.
Thunell is passionate about audio books, Timothy Ferriss inspired lifestyle design, and Terrence Malick films.
