Meyrick Kaminski is a performance-based artist interested in questioning how cultural meaning is created. Following education at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia, he moved to Berlin in 2008.
In 2009 he was awarded funding from the European Cultural Foundation (Amsterdam) for his project, The Folklore & Artistic Troupe of Dhalaristan. An interactive experiment in cultural creation and the manufacturing of authenticity, its aim was simple - to find out if culture can be actively created.
A performing troupe was developed in Berlin. They evolved dance, rituals, musical instruments, cuisine, mythology, puppetry, language and jewellery through workshops. With these cultural elements the troupe toured from Berlin, through the Balkans, to Istanbul. A film is being made from the large amount of video footage collected.
In 2012 Meyrick Kaminski is developing a series of solo video works in which the role of gesture in creating meaning is explored. Victory is one of 4 video pieces to be created in 2012, using the city of Berlin as backdrop.
