Emerging music sensation, Mili is a singer-songwriter who is based in India. Her journey into music began at an early age and she confesses “I knew right from the very start that I was destined to sing and become a musician”. While her training in Western Classical music sharpened her innate talent and provided a solid foundation, Mili chose to explore different genres that helped shape her musical vocabulary. As a stylistically diverse vocalist, Mili fluidly slips into any language or genre of music. She grew up on Rock and RnB, discovered Jazz and fell in love with the concept of vocal improvisations before delving into film music.
From singing with bands she moved on to perform with world class music composers like A.R. Rahman, Amit Trivedi and jazz guitarist Vinny Valentino.
She was scooped up by Amit Trivedi as a playback singer for the soulful Meethi Boliyan in the Hindi film Kai Po Che. In the hands of a genre-breaking genius like Trivedi, Meethi Boliyan evolved into a beautiful composition that infused something new and unconventional in Bollywood music. Impressed by Mili’s originality and style, Trivedi incorporated her idea of vocal improvisation in the track which enhanced its fresh appeal. Soon Mili was propelled into the limelight at the Coke Studio@MTV India-Season 2 when she revealed her amazing vocal talent in Badari Badariya and Yatra, both composed by Amit Trivedi, and wowed audiences across the globe. The timing was perfect. After the successful release of Kai Po Che, Meethi Boliyan went on to become a critically acclaimed chartbuster.
Yet, it was the maestro music director A R Rahman who gave Mili her first break in film music earlier, with the Tamil song Keda Kari in Raavanan and Maham Maye in the Telugu film Komaram Puli. Her recent release is Parakka Seivaai in the Tamil film Ambikapathy, composed by music director A R Rahman. She has also worked with leading film composer Harris Jayaraj, rendering the Tamil hit Rettai Kathire in Maattrran and done the theme for the Malayalam movie Urumi with composer Deepak Dev. She collaborated with DJ Ivan on his first international release Music Is My Life. In 2009, Mili shared the stage with guitar virtuoso Vinny Valentino at the Java Jazz Festival.
Mili ventured into songwriting while working for the jazz festival and the experience opened a new door to her creativity.
“I’m in the process of writing original music. I’m trying to add all the music and experiences that inspired me into write my songs.”
Mili’s music is influenced by her passion for western music and deep love for Indian classical and film music. Her personal favourites are Sting, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby McFerrin and Steely Dan besides legends of film music like Chitra.
Not one to be stereotyped, Mili believes that her music should not be restricted to a genre. As a singer in demand, she is happy doing advertising jingles for television, playback singing and live shows. Her voice adds magic to numerous advertisements, including Coca Cola’s Maaza campaign, the Incredible India! Tourism Campaign 2013 and Cadbury Silk.
With a hunger to break new ground in music, Mili is a fearless artiste who constantly challenges her vocal expression to create signature songs.
