Matthew K. Nayman was born in Toronto, Ontario in the year 1984. After finishing high school, he spent a year studying liberal arts at Ryerson University, and then transferred to the Film and Video program at York University.
Matt started making films when he was 16 years old, teaching himself the basics of cinematography, editing and special effects. He read widely about the work of his special effects idols Willis O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen. Eventually, he became less interested in special effects than in the craft of making the films themselves.
While completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film at York University, Matt worked as a freelance cinematographer for several independent filmmakers and production houses, directing and shooting everything from children’s television show pilots to workshops for Kodak Canada.
Matthew hopes to continue working in Canada’s film industry as a cinematographer and director, creating films that balance a strong visual style with clear and concise visual story-telling.
