Nick Egan Bio
With international acclaim for art direction and design, British film director Nick Egan combined his understanding of visual language into an iconic form of punk rock imagery that would be distinctive and influential in some of the most celebrated album covers, fashion lines, and music videos. This success led him into the world of commercials, television and film.
Born in London, Nick attended The Watford College of Art and Design, where he studied graphic design. While still attending school, he began designing covers for historic bands like The Clash, The Ramones and The Dexy’s Midnight Runners, for which he would have his first hit cover ‘Searching for the Young Soul Rebels.’ He soon began forming a friendship with entrepreneur Malcom McLaren, the former Sex Pistols’ manager, and was asked by McLaren to design artwork for the bands; album cover ‘Bow Wow Wow’s See Jungle’ (which was recently voted # 10 of the top 100 covers of all times by Rolling Stones Magazine) and McLaren’s own albums ‘Duck Rock’ and ‘Fans’. Nick continued to design album covers for some of the most recognizable and influential musicians, including the Psychedelic Furs, Iggy Pop, Inxs, Bob Dylan, The Cult, The Pretenders and more.
This was only a taste of the achievements Nick Egan would experience in the arts. His next adventures would lead him into the world of fashion. Although he would keep designing successfully in the music scene, the fashion world would call on his talents. Nick began to collaborate with the extremely celebrated designer Vivienne Westwood on her “World End” clothing line. He would design the graphic material as well as the art direction for her shows in both London and Paris, and would connect the world of fashion and music with a punk aesthetic that would become a culture phenomenon.
After he relocated to New York, Nick continued his work in both the music and fashion scene, and would in fact add another dimension to his artistry. He designed the record sleeves for Bob Dylan’s Grammy winning ‘Biograph’, and then art-directed a book on John Lennon by Rock-n-Roll photographer Bob Gruen. He continued his work in fashion by designing the label for the soon-to-be honored and revered, but not yet known, Marc Jacobs, This collaboration of Egan and Jacobs took Jacobs all the way to the Head Designer of Perry Ellis. The pair would later collaborate on the Sonic Youth video ‘Sugar Kane’ starring actress Chloe Sevigny in one of her first on-camera roles.
This was only the beginning of Nick Egan’s career into the world of video direction, and he would become known to many as ‘Mr. MTV.’ For many of the bands that he had designed covers for before, he would now direct their videos, including those Iggy Pop’s ‘Real Wild Child’, Soup Dragons’ ‘Divine Thing’, (for which he won an MTV Music Video Award nomination), SilverChair, Alanis Morissette, Mick Jagger, Sonic Youth, Duran Duran, Oasis, INXS, and many others.
Along with directors like Spike Jonze, David Fincher, and Michael Bay, Nick worked for Propaganda Films. He also worked with Satellite Films, directing commercials and television spots for Coco Cola, Levi’s, Nike, Nintendo and Sony Play Station.
