The Video itself had two purposes. It should be displayed as a projection on the building itself and be played to the opening speech (thats what the ribbon cutting and the forming of the olympic rings is for).

We furthermore developed an installation part where people could interact with the ribbons. I think Alex will upload some in action footage soon.

Now some technical details:
It's coded in c++ using openFrameworks and openGL/GLSL and runs originally at 60FPS. The toughest challenge for me was the physics and the shading of the ribbons.
Using correct per Vertex normals and Per Pixel lighting plus a little bit of bloom and tonemapping gave me the results I was going for. The ribbon behaviour itself is completely based and boiding rules. I didn't use any noise (only for the camera) because it is simply too slow. (If anybody knows a fast c++ implementation of simplex noise please let me know)

Cast: moka, Alex Beim
tag:vimeo,2008-12-21:clip2543780 moka Alex Beim Olympic Oval Vancouver - Realtime Video realtime, c++, openGL, glsl, interactive, installation, olympics, vancouver, olympic oval, olympics 2010, openFrameworks Realtime Displacement- + NormalMapping on Sphere Sun, 21 Dec 2008 03:16:58 -0500 http://vimeo.com/2584246 moka

I came back to this project:
vimeo.com/1600741

Back then the lighting was pretty much fake since the normals where incorrect. All particle interaction is controlled entirely by motion on camera. Most of the fine detail is lost in the video compression, you can see much more in the original quicktime.

“Gold” is an interactive installation which explores our obsession with super-stardom, and the extravagance that accompanies it. Through a ‘magic mirror’, revel in a world of excess where you are the super-star. Shower in glittery gold, experience almost omnipotent powers as you materialize, morph and dematerialize into pure sparkling gold dust. Immortalize yourself as a shimmering golden statue, before you collapse and fade away.

The installation uses custom software written with openFrameworks and the OpenCV computer vision library. The software analyzes the video feed from infra-red cameras in real-time and generates 1080p HD output using OpenGL.

An iPhone adaptation of this can be found at memo.tv/iphone

Source code for the particle system in this demo (minus the fancy effects) can be found at memo.tv/vertex_arrays_vbos_and_point_sprites_with_openframeworks This demonstrates how to use VBOs, Vertex Arrays and Point Sprites for sweet sweet performance enhancements.

memo.tv/gold_dust

Cast: Memo Akten
tag:vimeo,2008-11-19:clip2281077 Memo Akten Gold demo c++, openframeworks, particles, fluid, motion detection, opencv, computer vision, memotv, msavisuals, opengl, glsl Air Guitar prototype Fri, 07 Nov 2008 17:13:53 -0500 http://vimeo.com/2171658 Chris O'Shea

Rough first prototype for the air guitar championship installation.

Stereo camera used to estimate hand positions using depth image.

Concept dropped as requires player to stand rather still to be accurate, and as a guitar contest, we knew people would jump around like crazy.
