Mark Martinez is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores identity, lived experience and history. Focusing on the post-civil rights era, Martínez’ line of inquiry interrogates the contemporary function of racial identity in US society. Specifically, Martinez works to muddy definitions of racial whiteness by displacing this phenomenon with language and absurd gesture. From an “Offwhite” perspective, a term Martinez uses to identify his process, Martinez draws heavily from the social sciences to frame these explorations.
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Mark Martínez has been living in Portland, Oregon since 2008. Martínez is currently a Portland based artist and 2014 MFA Studio Practice candidate at Portland State University. In 2011 Martínez received his BFA in Intermedia at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.
