Hey Phil,
It is very good, in comparison to the internal mic it's fabulous. On the 7d it would be even better if there would be a magic lantern firmware available to turn off the AGC.
Considering a choice of mic this is one of the best if you plan on recording music and/or speech. I also tested some sennheiser mics but found the rode to give the most natural sound with preservation of high tones and low ones. Love the stereo as well!
