The Story Beyond the Still - Behind The Scenes

Introducing the first user-generated HD Video Contest where photographers become filmmakers, and we all see beyond the still. To kick off the contest, Canon asked me to interpret what story I saw beyond the still, and to tell that story with the new Canon EOS 7D. My short film will be the first chapter of seven, each ending with a still photograph for the next aspiring filmmaker to interpret. Posing the question to everyone, what do you see beyond the still?

My short film will premiere on January 7th on Vimeo, and the contest will begin January 15th. I look forward to seeing what everyone creates! More info coming soon!

Last summer I caught the train to London with my friend Jason testing out our Canon HV20/30's.

The HV20 is a great little camera to shoot with in locations such as this. Security are never too bothered by this little tourist camera.

The People I know in Brighton, play an important role in the Rollerblading scene within the UK. Everybody knows them for their contribution to Rollerblading however I wanted to share an insight into their lives besides Rollerblading, also showing how diverse Brighton can be.

This 4 minute piece filmed using a Canon 7D was shot 24p during the week on a typical day in their lives.

After 10's of thousands of still photo's he runs in the other direction when the camera comes out. Now that he get's to watch himself in a "mini movie", he's much warmer towards the cam. The funniest part is watching him watch himself and crack up laughing when he realizes he's being funny.. It's the funniest thing in the world.

As far as I know this could be the first 7D footage to go up onto cinema. It's an homage to spooks/CSI type shows and I shot it entirely on the 7D. It premiered on Dec 14th in Manchester and goes out with all 12, 15 and PG rated films across the North West of England. 7D footage sharing cinema screen time with Avatar - who'd have thought it...?

People from all over the world can be seen here and as always it just adds to the beautiful melting pot of culture that make Maui, Maui.

Marvin likes fast cars, even though he is only 28 he drives a Mercedes SLK. We follow him through the streets of Singapore that he cruises at night.

My second film with the pre-production Canon Eos1DmkIV. Shot with available street lighting and a little Litepanels LP Micro for fill in. Shot between 1600 and 6400 asa this footage is 1080p , edited in Final Cut Pro, lightly adjusted for colour with some smoothcam.

A couple of weekends ago I headed off to Southampton for the day, a rather grey and dull day but at least it wasn't raining. Of course it did rain, but at least it was at the end of day, about the same time as the light began to fail.

Shot on a rather gray day at the end of November 09, with a Canon 5D Mk2 and some grad filters.

Colour Graded, blurred, masked, messed and mashed up in After Effects.
