From the moment he’s brought into juvenile detention, Rodrick believes he’ll be going home in no time. The former gang member had spent a year in juvenile boys prison and had made great strides in straightening out his life. Rodrick is adamant that his recent charges of possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and probation violation all stem from being at the wrong place at the wrong time. But juvenile judge Mary Beth Bonaventura never likes to see kids back in court after they leave the first time. Will she be willing to cut Rodrick some slack, or will she come down hard on this soon-to-be 18 year old?
- Profiles of Delinquency: Kymyada 30 mins
Kymyada, a teen mother, is arrested on runaway charges after her mother and her godmother can’t locate her after a night of partying with friends. Kymyada maintains this is all a misunderstanding, but her mother believes Kymyada needs more structure in her life. Even though most parents beg to get their kids out of juvie, Kymyada isn’t so lucky. On the witness stand, her mom says it’s time for Kymyada to show more respect and refuses to take her home. This leaves judge Mary Beth Bonaventura with few options on what to do with this teenage mom.
- Profiles of Delinquency: Devon 17 mins
When cameras first capture 18-year old Devon Starkey walking in the back door of juvie, his heavily bandaged arm is in a sling, the result of a gunshot wound he picked up ten days earlier while trying to rob a drug dealer. Devon was arrested on a bench warrant for missing a previous court date. Devon claims this was because he thought once he turned 18, his juvenile record would be purged. Truth is, Devon still had some music to face in Judge Bonaventura’s courtroom, and this time around, she has no sympathy for his current predicament.
- Profiles of Delinquency: Ayryana 17 mins
Ayryana says she was trying to do the right thing as the guardian of her younger brothers at a high school football game. The only problem was that due to past events, the school told her she was not allowed to attend the game. Her brothers were already inside the stadium and a verbal exchange ensues that winds her up in detention. It's revealed in court that Ayryana is an integral part of her family and her mother desparately wants her home, but will the judge decide that's the best place for her?
- Profiles of Delinquency: Joshua 40 mins
Joshua Cordell, a seemingly soft-spoken and mild-mannered 13-year-old, finds himself in juvenile court on charges that he battered his own mother. This character profile illuminates how juvenile crime is not just a social issue, but all too often, a family one.
