Masaaki Yuasa is a critically acclaimed director who created Mind Game (Winner of Best Film, Best Director, Best Script and Best Animation Film for Fantasia Festival in Canada, 2005), Kemonozume (2006), Kaiba (2008) and The Tatami Galaxy (2010). After Kick-Heart (2013) completed, he went on to direct the smash-hit, Ping Pong (2014) based on Taiyō Matsumoto's manga of the same name. In addition, Yuasa also guest-directed an episode of Adventure Time called, "Food Chain" (2014) for Cartoon Network. He is known among his fans as a cutting edge director who dares to push the boundaries of conventional storytelling and cinematography.
Production I.G is one of Japan's most prominent animation studios made famous by Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell. I and the G started as a joint collaboration of visionary production manager Mitsuhisa Ishikawa and popular character designer Takayuki Goto, the company was established on December 15, 1987 as I.G Tatsunoko, a name bearing the initials of its founders as well as the renowned studio they were from. The new company met with success and in 1993, it’s founders renamed it Production I.G. Since then, the studio has enjoyed yearly growth in sales and size.
This film was made possible by thousands of generous supporters who helped back this film on Kickstarter. Kick-Heart was the first Japanese anime to successfully use crowd-funding as a financing alternative. Kick-Heart was also featured on the "Kickstarter Blog", the "Kickstarter: Pick of the Week" email newsletter, and lastly, the "Kickstarter Project of the Day". In the end, Kick-Heart raised over $200,000 USD with 3200 backers.
