There are 10 million skateboarders in the United States.
There are 50 million skateboarders in the world.
There are 15 skateboarders in Myanmar. Find out why.
Youth of Yangon is a 12 minute short film that documents the emerging skateboarding community in Myanmar and the struggles they face pursuing their passion.
Our first film, Altered Focus: Burma (watch below in the Extras) discovered this small group of skateboarders in 2009. Ever since, we wanted to go back and document their story.
After hearing the only skatepark in Yangon got torn down in November 2011, producer Ali Drummond and myself travelled back to Yangon in September and October 2012 to tell their story of struggle to have a space to skateboard and their passion for this activity.
Told through interviews with several of the key skateboarders and filmed on location in Yangon and Naypyidaw - where the only concrete skatepark is situated - learn about the passion, skill and commitment this group of young people have for skateboarding.
Youth of Yangon features music from Mercury Music Prize winners Alt-J as well as Bombazine Black.
It was chosen as part of the Official Selection at the 2013 Newport Beach Film Festival in Los Angeles and screened in Yangon for one week with the crew present thanks to support from the British Council of Myanmar.
