Rebecca Pappas lives in sunny California where she has been making work under the name Pappas and Dancers since 2002. Between 2002-2006 her company appeared throughout northern California at venues and festivals including the Monterey Dance Festival, Westwave/Summerfest at Theater Artaud, The Underserved at ODC, and The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. In 2006 she moved to Los Angeles where she began Monster, a project that has been seen in 17 venues in 13 cities nationally and internationally including Tallinn University in Tallinn, Estonia; The Esplanade in Singapore; and The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Monster uses imagined “creature vocabularies” to examine Jewish history, shame, and cycles of violence. It is reflective of Pappas’ interest in the body as an archive for personal and social histories. P and D’s latest work, a dance concerning itself with history and memory, is a ritual for forgetting that joyfully unmoors, discombobulates and confuses the past. In addition to choreographing her own work Pappas has performed for artists including Barak Marshall, Victoria Marks, Alma Esperanza Cunningham, Rachael Lincoln, and Erica Shuch. Pappas and Dancers has received choreographic residencies at Yaddo, Dragon’s Egg, Djerassi, UCLA’s Hothouse and Shotwell Studios, and funding from the Clorox Company Foundation, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and the UCLA/Mellon Initiative for Research on the Holocaust in American and World Culture. Pappas is currently adjunct faculty at Pasadena City College and a CHIME Grant recipient.
