Having gained a Master of Arts degree from London’s Royal College of Art I started work in the animation industry at Halas and Batchelor studios in 1979.
It was there that I directed my first professional short, an early music video to Kraftwerk’s Autobahn.

I then freelanced for a number of studios, from the Educational Film Centre to Richard Williams Animation, and eventually got involved with producer John Coates and his TVC studio in 1982. I was privileged to animate on most of the studio’s classic animations, starting off with Raymond Briggs’ BAFTA winning The Snowman, and going onto When the Wind Blows, Father Christmas, and Granpa and Oi Get Off Our Train.

I later became an animation director for the studio on Beatrix Potter’s The Tailor of Gloucester, and the feature length TV specials Wind in the Willows, and Willows in Winter. I then moved on to directing my first half hour special for TVC. This was The Tale of Two Bad Mice and Johnny Town Mouse, another in the Beatrix Potter series broadcast on the BBC, and featured the voice talents of Hugh Laurie, Alan Bennett, Felicity Kendal, and Rik Mayall.

Other directing jobs have included episodes of the adult animation series Stressed Eric for BBC2 , and Mill Times (2000) for the PBS network in the US.

From 2003 to 2004 I was series director on Meg and Mog (52x5 minute pre-school for CITV), and I worked closely with Jan Pienkowski, the illustrator of the books, to achieve a smooth translation of his work from page to screen.

From 2005 to 2009 I was animation director on three series of the pre-school show Little Princess, for Channel FIVE’s Milkshake slot.

Both the Meg and Mog series and Little Princess were nominated for Children’s BAFTAs.

Over the years I have also animated and directed numerous TV adverts, most recently the Kit Kat ad featuring Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas character.

I have recently adapted a 90 minute film version of Raymond Briggs’ Ethel and Ernest for a planned cinema release, featuring the voice talents of Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn. It will be a TVC studio production. The full 90 minute animatic has been completed and funding is being sought to go into full production.

2010 – 2011 - storyboarding on HIT/Nelvana’s 3D pre-school show Mike the Knight.
