People (in general) terrify me. Why? Is that even a necessary question? I suppose it is.

We gravitate to one another, at least most of us do, despite the almost certain knowledge that any trust we engage in will almost certainly be betrayed.

We hope that other species lack consciousness, perhaps out of compassion, since we know how painful consciousness, relationships and trusts betrayed will be. Some of us become violent, others become passive... there is no good solution.
