I am the co-founder of the ALS Residence Initiative (ALSRI). I was diagnosed with ALS in October 2006. Over the next 3-1/2 years, I helped create what would be named the Steve Saling ALS Residence. It is the first and only home of its kind in the world. The ALS Residence is fully automated so that even the nearly locked-in have a level of independence and productivity previously unavailable and the home is vent-ready so that a person with ALS (pALS) can comfortably live the rest of their natural life. The mission of ALSRI is to replicate the ALS & MS Residences all over the country to provide an option to live with ALS instead of die of it. ALS does not have to be fatal anymore. Until medicine proves otherwise, technology IS the cure.
