If the conversation starts off with talk about bringing New York back, chances are you’ve just heard a Square Off record.“Gritty,” “Authentic,” and “Street Music for the Soul,” is how fans of this Harlem-based rap duo describe their sound, and when your father just so happens to be Doug E. Fresh, arguably one of the greatest entertainers in the music business, those attributes are compliments of a lifelong grooming process. Being born into one of Hip Hops’ most influential circles, has given Square Off MCs Slim, (Dayquan Davis) and Trips, (Saloman Davis) a unique perspective and appreciation for the music they love.
Their self-described new old school style is their way of celebrating history and paying homage to all of the artists that paved the way. One of those artists, the late Jady Walker a.k.a. K. Superior who was a member of the Get Fresh Crew would give Square Off their name when they were only 9 and 10 years old, ( Square Off ) means them against the world ready to face on any obstacle that's in their way.
The group, which originally included two other members, would go on to release their first mixtape, Fresh 2 Def in 2008. Youngest in Charge with Cory Gunz (2009) and Last of a Dying Breed (2010) would soon follow as the brothers’ continued to organically build their fan base by putting out material via Myspace, YouTube (over 1,000,000 views) and Twitter. They also keep the community involved by inviting them to participate and sometimes even direct their music videos. In May 2011, Square Off will release their most well rounded project to date with, Money, Moet & Memories, which features the singles “Standing Alone,” and “Ready to Roll.”
Square Off have created their own movement by starting their own record label ( Square Off Records ) by signing other artist, producers and directors. Beyond the music they plan on creating a clothing line and eventually establishing a non-profit school of music where future MC’s can learn how to navigate the music industry and hone their craft. But for now, the focus is on perfecting their own.
Being the sons of the the world’s greatest and originator of the human beat box, these young men ( Trips and Slim ) have a lot to live up to and undoubtedly expectations run high. A few things are certain.. you can expect them to work hard to earn their place among the hip-hop heavyweights, you can expect them to uphold the high musical and performance standards set by Doug E. fresh, and you can expect to be hearing a lot more from Square Off in the near future and for many years to come
