I did a practice pan and did the body twist thingy (feet pointed at the end point, body twist to the start: so that you unwind to the beginning - smoothest method I've found).

The stabilization is good but it's not as good as a as using a tripod. All of this was shot with the stabilizer on but to get my pan shots I held the camera and tried to be as smooth as possible. My still shots were done on a Manfrotto Modopocket.

I use this camcorder mostly for travel videos and for that it's great - not too heavy! or too big!
