STEPS (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability) is a research centre at the Institute of Development Studies and Sussex University, UK, which brings together social and natural scientists.
We are researching and describing "pathways" to sustainability. There are often many alternative ways to work for sustainability and development: some are widely supported and others deserve more recognition. Some can favour poor people and the environment, and others can threaten them.
Our research highlights existing and new pathways in health, agriculture and water & sanitation, and describes how they relate to politics, society and the natural world.
We are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
