Kanchi is a Bangalore based International Independent Film Maker. Producing, Directing, screenwriting and shooting films since the twilight of the millenium.
Self taught, he found a sudden upsurge of inspiration at the age of 16, winning his first award for a film called "the end", he found himself wandering deep into the realms of film making, experimenting, searching, seeking, struggling and then finding his own style, which he has been defining and redifining ever since.
"Deja Vu" a crazed out short film, that made many cringe and a few nauseous & many disturbed but in the end laughed at their own conceptions of reality gave him a sense of the power he could yield with the camera, the film went on to give him his first international exposure, running across continents and several film festivals.
Along with success, came hunger for more, bigger, better, deeper and crazier and thus was born "Black Sugar", a film banned in many countries with many refusing to even consider censoring the film. This was not a roadblock but a blessing in disguise. The film hit the underground circuit and went to be a cult classic that it is now. it was everything a low-budget indie flick could be, made on a shoe-string budget it impressed many, even whos who of Hollywood.
The film premiered at the New York film Festival alongside oscar nominated films such as "city of God" and could still hold it's own ground. The feature made Kanchi a well known face in the Indie-scene.
Kanchi continued his stride making features in the backlots of hollywood signing two films "ACID" & "TAXIWALLAH". The films were more polished, with themes of Drug Abuse & Crime. Both the films were above-average successes bringing in more work in the US for him, but exploring Americana was not on his agenda.
He returned to India to make films with Indian stories, the acute aggression in his storytelling gave way to more simpler ways and tones. Guns & crime were replaced by loving friends and more urban relatable stories. simplicity became his mantra.
He settled down in Mumbai helping launch several films, he directed many a videos for social organisations, helping where he could, bringing awareness about AIDS, helping street children get educated and made films about human rights.
Kumbha Mela,The biggest gathering in the world is held in India every 12 years, Kanchi next made a documentary capturing the order in chaos, that is the event. with the odds topped up against him & his crew, with unbelievably difficult situations, but the film was made and is on it's way to becoming the fastest selling Indian spiritual Documentary.
Rediscovering the magic of life, the wonder of this world, the innocence of childhood, this was the theme for "Hong Kong Dreaming" his next feature film that was made in Hong Kong. Starring chinese actors in an english film. This was the first joint venture between Indian Film Makers & their chinese counterparts. The film Premiered at the Uk international Film Festival to a standing ovation and is on it's way around the various festivals internationally and is ready for a theatrical Release.
Kanchi has on several films not only scripted & Directed but also produced and taken on the mantle of CInematography & editing. Multi-tasking and still churning out the standards internationally.
He's now working on a feature totally different from anything he's ever done, the project is still under wraps but promises to be the film to watch out for.
