Inspired by Pixar and Ghibli and their desire to turn animation into something real, waterMelon challenged themselves to build a 3D printed Zoetrope for the 2014 KLIK animation festival. The OctoMadness is a combination of 3D animation, 3D printing, sawing, painting and gluing every piece together. It really embodies all of the things that waterMelon loves to do. Designer and animator Klaas-Harm de Boer, wanted to create very flexible characters that show the power and freedom of animation. This zoetrope enables the audience to see each individual frame separately and gives a great insight into creating the final animation. A BIG thanks to everybody that got involved and put in their time and effort to make this one happen! Thanks for the great experience and collaboration! A two week job, I just wanted to get something made quickly, so I decided to play about with colour a bit, and this is what happened. Not entirely successful, as usual the central parts don't really work and the illusion falls apart when you pull out to see the whole object, but I like the bits that do work like the squashing and stretching bands of colour and the flickering colour changes... 3D Zoetrope using handmade Fimo-clay sculptures and Lazy Susan hardware. The hedgehog seems to be dangerous and a bit solitary with all those spines... But do not judge it so fast. See also how is it inside. Hedgehogs, reduces the complex world to simple. The hedgehog likes raspberries, and what it does is it goes to a raspberry bush and it eats them. Simple. Try to live as a hedgehog, pick what is relevant for you and reduce all the problems to simple.

My final major project for university. I chose to do a 3D Zoetrope because it was a combination between animation and sculpting and since I am interested in both traditional and 3D animation it seemed to be the best solution for me. I am really happy with the way it turned out, sadly the way it looks in real life is much better than what you will see on this video but this is what I managed to put together after I spent a day recording it, playing around with the strobe light and the shutter speed of the video camera.

I built this Zoetrope using a 3D printer a few years back. I printed 8 frames of a 3D animated horse galloping. A strobe light separates the individual horse figures and gives the illusion of movement. I shot this on a Red Epic and the glass was an old 1970's Zuiko Olympus SLR lens.

Was just organising some files and came across this, and thought I'd share it. It's the animation that I created in After Effects and then projected onto my zoetrope for the unofficial music video I did for 'IPT2' by Battles. You can see that here - https://vimeo.com/20916484 More info on this and other projects at www.retchy.com/pages/project_zoetrope.html

                      What are Tags?

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
