A short documentary that looks at the dying art of the Amasan, or Sea Women of Shirahama, Japan, women who plumb the depths of the ocean without any technical diving equipment, holding their breath for up to two minutes at a time. They dive for Abalone, a prized culinary delicacy, fast disappearing from the world's oceans because of over-fishing. At a time when the pressures ofd globalization and environmental degradation are wreaking havoc on the fishing industry worldwide, these women and their sacred relationship to each other and the sea provide a welcome metaphor for balance, hope and sustainability.

“There’s no synthetics, no chemicals or anything infused on them,” says farmer Michael Wallace. He sells homegrown fruits and vegetables at local farmer’s markets. “Our mixed greens, our Asian mustards, our tropical fruits, and our sprouts,” Wallace points out. In recent years he’s seen a growing interest in his produce. “It’s taken us about four years and we have a great following.” Wallace’s business model is also part of a success model for living a long and healthy life. “Dan Buettner was the author of a study that was done that termed Blue Zones. Areas in the world where there are more people that live into the 90 and 100-year range than any place else in the world,” says Dr. Sal Lacagnina, vice president of health and wellness with Lee Memorial Health System. Scattered around the world, a handful of Blue Zones’ might teach us a thing or two. “The commonalities really come in what they eat, how they move, how they’re active on a regular basis, and their social surroundings,” says Dr. Lacagnina. Americans get black marks on how we treat aging. It’s associated with unproductiveness, frailty, and loneliness. In Blue Zones, the opposite is true; there is reverence for the well-aged. “Individuals, as they got older, were revered for their knowledge, for their wisdom, for their participation.” Lack of stress was another key component. Slowing down and enjoying life. “These people are not living in nursing homes, they’re living either independently or with other family members, so they’re living a very vital life,” says Dr. Lacagnina. Keeping people strong are exercise and diet. Moving more and taking a fresh look what food. “We’re targeting a lot of food that people have not been exposed to and we’re trying to teach them how to eat food like this, incorporate this into their diet,” explains Wallace. Making small changes, it’s never too late to start aging well. To know your face better, you need to feel the bones in your face. The individual bones in your face go a long way to form what your features look like. Where your eye-socket is, where your cheekbones are, how thick they are, and so-on and so forth. Just so you can visualize that, I’m going to do a makeup that shows where the bones are in my face.

For the second of the two age make-ups, I am going to do a very scary old lady. This makeup is loosely based on that of the Serefema Berman’s in Ivon the Terrible parts one and two. Serefema plays the part of Ivan’s very scary aunt, the one who is so scary that it makes Ivan seem like a nice guy. So she has a number of facial features that will be in line with mine, but I will take all of the previous facial features that I was using and twisting them towards being more scary and more angular and ignoring the happy friendly ones.

For this lesson, we will be doing an old age or middle age character. I will be doing two versions of this that aren’t specific characters in drama, but are two extreme types, so you can see the kinds of variations you can do with using age make up and tilting it a little to one side or the other of what you do when you are simply doing yourself aged. I am going to first do an extremely pleasant nice old lady.
