Video by Ryan Simmons June 29th. It was a gorgeous Winnipeg summer day. An estimated 700 people cam out to the Art City WHALE Parade. A celebration of Manitoba's Waterways, and a hopeful demonstration of the power of creativity to create social change. It was beautiful. A pod of 12 life-sized beluga puppets led a procession which included waterfowl of all types, fishes, canoes, motorboats, kids of all ages dressed as seaweed and other water creatures, and the legendary Winnipogo that is said to inhabit Lake Winnipeg. Our friends Rob Altemeyer (MLA) and Jenny Gerbasi (City Councillor) cut the ribbon that initiated a flood of positivity into the streets of West Broadway. The Manitoba Arts Council, Resource Assistance for Youth, the Youth Agencies Alliance, and West Broadway Youth Outreach were in full effect. Guest artist, Zoe Gordon led participants in a week-long workshop making 'underwater' hand-made instruments which were featured alongside the magnificent Flaming Trollies Marching Band. Guest artist duo, WHALE (Ryan Klatt & Laura Magnusson) launched a giant helium beluga for a 'swim' in the Manitoba skies - complete with video cameras, a GPS tracking device, and a bunch of tiny art made by Art City participants! A HUGE thanks to everyone who came out to participate in this social sculpture! Special thanks to Guest Artists, WHALE (Ryan Klatt & Laura Magnusson), and Zoe Gordon (Thunder Bay) and our partners: Manitoba Arts Council West Broadway Community Organization Canadian Heritage Neighbourhoods Alive! US artist collective Dearraindrop brought their colour-reading sound-making devices to Art City in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We covered a huge piece of white paper with paint, crayons, markers and sticker vinyl. Then we took Dearraindrop's colour readers, recorded samples of voice, toy accordion, recorders, or anything really, into them and then waved the devices over the colours. The devices read the colours and translated them as sounds, versions of the samples we had inputted, varying pitch and speed depending on the colour. (For instance, we found that waving the sensor over dark blue rendered a sound that was truest to the original sample recording; other colours made it squeak or bellow.) Everyone collaborated. Also fun was playing with Dearraindrops musical instruments, where you can input sound into the microphone and then mess around with the playback, like on the riotously painted guitar you see my brother playing at the end of the video. Dearraindrop were in Winnipeg as part of the Send + Receive Festival.

Approximately 160 youth from the Youth Agencies Alliance (YAA) collaborated on a diorama of their ideal version of Winnipeg. The diorama will showcase buildings and spaces youth want to change or highlight in their neighbourhoods—the possibilities were limitless and the results are an exciting, often unheard perspective of how younger generations would shape their city. Workshops were led by YAA members Art City and Graffiti Art Programming. This program was made possible with the support from United Way of Winnipeg, The Winnipeg Foundation, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport and Rotary Club of Winnipeg.

Art City and Graffiti Art Programming co-facilitate a series of art workshops with the 18 organizations that make up the Coalition of Community-Based Youth Serving Agencies. Well, this year the Coalition has a brand new name: The YOUTH AGENCIES ALLIANCE! To celebrate the youth of Winnipeg, and the agencies that serve them, the Alliance Art Show is an incredible collaboration of kids from across the city. This year, organizations were paired together and brought participating youth to Studio 393, in Portage Place mall, to make a portion of what would become a dream-like collaborative stop-motion animation movie, with contributions from youth across the city - led by Art City and Graffiti Art Programming, along with the fantastic edition of the Just TV team!
