Ashes (937 Metaphors), 2014 Digital Video (hands, ashes, 3 minutes), Duration: 27:35 Prevailing research in neurobiology suggests that the brainstem is the housing for the self. Because the brainstem is the connector of the body and the mind, this implies that every embodied action plays an inseparable role in self- formation. This video is from my MFA Thesis Exhibition. Along with the other work in the show, this video is a linkage of past and future autobiography. It is an indexed recording of a body generating maps and crossing boundaries. These boundaries are of the self that was, and is, and will be. Read more here: www.laurenshealittle.com/writing/thesis

There he sits, like some pot-bellied, pre-Cambrian snake shedding it's skin, covered in the ashen remains of his father. His heavy lidded gaze transfixing all who dare to look as the son struggles to emerge from beneath the burden of the man who came before. ------ Jason Covert's Excavation is an ultra-personal exploration of one man's fears and psychic wounds. It is a systemic consideration of the archetypal struggles we might all face. It's a memoir of sorts, but a memoir that addresses universal issues, meant to read like a mirror. By way of mythic conceits and symbolic imagery you're invited to peer into the mind of a man compelled to share his darkest depths, be that with his very blood or the ashes of his father before him. Though some may find the journey uncomfortable to watch, one thing is certain: it will leave no viewer untouched. Excavation, the exhibition, featuring a series of photographic self-portraits, mixed media sculptures (incorporating blood, human ash and Covert's own headstone), as well as the short film above, will open on Friday, May 16th (the artist's birthday) at the Hionas Gallery in Manhattan's Lower East Side. www.hionasgallery.com www.jasoncovert.com

Ashes to Ashes : Le Corps fort et fragile.

A short film dedicated to my gramps, Bill Hayes. Our family lost Bill when I was just in grade three, and while its been 15 years since he passed, and my direct memories of him are few, those that I do have I hold close to my heart. Initially this short film was simply a school project, however once this concept started growing for me I wanted to make it something much more than that. I chose to shoot the final shots of this piece at the very location at which we scattered Bill's ashes, as it's a place of true beauty and of high importance both to him and to our family. It holds incredibly high emotional value and it meant a lot to me to really make this something my whole family could enjoy. As I have gone on editing this film, I've also made the decision that I will be shooting an alternate version of the film that works outside the original guidelines of the school project, and utilizing my brother as the subject, dedicating it to both Bill and my father Brad as a gift on Father's Day 2014. Special thanks to Chris Marius Jones for being the subject for this short film.

Brother Bill and I went to Arizona recently to release our Mom’s ashes into the Sedona breeze. The video contains photos that Bill and I took, and includes some of our Mom’s favorite music. Be sure to turn on your speakers … the music starts about 25 seconds into the video. The quotes from family members are text messages we received during the adventure. I am posting this on Irene’s birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! We love you and miss you! XXXOOO
