Almost a full year after the release of Matthew Dear's monochromatic opus, Black City, the album's swansong single, "Slowdance," gets a video. San Diego filmaker Charles Bergquist was tasked with transforming the undulating piece of goth romanticism into a video. He received, basically, creative autonomy, and set about trying to decipher a track that is, in his words, "about the disruption of memory, at it’s visual core." The result is a fluid, heady, almost voyeuristic collage of urban landscapes, visual effects, and unsubtle shots of a certain ingenue. "In the song’s build and layering of memories of her," he says, "She, the environment shared, and the unknown becomes blended, fractured and infinitely heaped together." It does look like thinking backwards feels—uncertain, romantic, bizarre." "The lyrics drove the photography and the sound drove the texture and slices," Bergquist says. "For most of the edit and post-production work, I let the track dictate the visuals." That means slightly regimented cuts—timed to beats sometimes, but not always—a complete lack of color, aqueous imagery, and a microscopic attention to detail. And with that, the final piece of the Black City puzzle has fallen into place. Matthew Dear's latest audio/video excursion combines the upbeat title track from his new 'Headcage EP' with mesmerizing abstraction from London-based director Morgan Beringer. The upbeat future-pop and signature Dear croon of "Headcage" meet shifting quasi-geological patterns, which eventually morph into hazy, near-perceptible flashes. Certainly a turn towards the light, following Dear's work for 2010's 'Black City.' 2012 will see a new full-length from Matthew. Concept/Directed by Morgan Beringer: http://vimeo.com/morganism Release info: http://ghostly.com/releases/headcage This video contains a shortened version of the original track "Headcage."

Director Tommy O'Haver's video for "Her Fantasy" takes us on a journey through bizarre sequences of debauchery and seduction with a hint of humor, as he pays homage to Avant Garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger in a self-described "mash-up." BLACK: a celebration of beauty in the absence of light. A night of music and culture in the historic Bowery Bank Building. This film is our expression. Words of concept from art director Jason Naylor: "A HAND MOVES, BLACK MOVES WITH IT. A BLACK DRIP SPLATTERS ON FLESH AGAIN. SENSUAL MOVEMENTS LURE US INTO A BLACKENING WORLD. AS BODIES BECOME DARKER AND DARKER WE BECOME AWARE THAT WE ARE LOSING LIGHT WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BEING BURIED WITH BLACK. STILL UNSURE OF WHAT’S GOING ON WE INDULGE IN BLACK, AND FADE AWAY. OUR EYES OPEN. WE ARE ALIVE." BLACK will be a conceptual music experience, an ode to a color that is a lifestyle, a color that defines New York. The event will feature live musical performances by Matthew Dear, The Virgins, The Rapture DJ's, and Jim-E Stack. More information available: www.black-nyc.com We'd like to thank Sennheiser and Hennessy Black for their support in allowing us to produce this film.
