Telluride is known for its funky town, box canyon vistas, Chair 9 bumps, steep piste, and a superb Ski School for the youngsters. But over the years, they've added some gnarly hike-to terrain into the mix. Of course, hiking to Palmyra Peak is the pinnacle of this in-bounds adventure but there's also shorter hikes, to the left and right of the Peak, that a sea-level mortal can perform multiple times in a day. Dihedral Face is one of my favorite zones that provides some classic San Juan extreme skiing. After skiing Dihedral you can tap into the hidden gems of Black Iron Bowl. Gold Hill Chutes are the second major in-bounds hikes that send you over to the opposite side of Palmyra. From open bowls to narrow couloirs, you can definitely find a chute that matches your current mood. From Gold Hill 7-10, you can traverse either to the Fans area on the right or all the way to the left in to the Nice Chute zone. When all of that is over, one can always run over to Bon Vivant for some French Onion soup or to Tomboy Tavern for a happy hour PBR....or like this video, run down and ski with your 2 year old until the lifts close. :-) Full report here: http://www.slaythegnar.com/2014/03/tasting-the-topography-telluride-021514/ Enjoy!

Well, its that time of year again for the family to head out for some fun at Telluride. After a few weeks of some decent snowfall, we arrived into the town of Telluride embracing 50F temps, and naturally, low expectations of killer snow. However, the high elevation North facing slopes remained in mid-winter shape begging for some human activity. The very first morning called for an immediate leisurely jog up to the summit of Palmyra Peak...to acclimatize, warm up the legs, take in the views, meet Seth Morrisson, and so on. As a skier, when its bluebird, no wind, warm, all terrain open, and winter snow in Telluride, you have to take full advantage. With a 4 year old in Ski School, a 22 month old lapping the magic carpet, and some ridiculously fast groomers with the Mrs, this video encompasses a couple laps on my own. Descents include far skier's right entrance of Roy Boy off Palmyra, Capitol above Black Iron Bowl, Review, Nice Chute, Gold Hill Chute #10, and multiple laps down my favorite zone....Dihedral Face. Combine the above with some impeccable food, luscious drinks, quality ski time with the entire family, and you have the makings of the perfect San Juan ski trip.

With a dismal February in Tahoe, we decided to take another trip to Telluride. As luck would have it, it snowed right before our arrival with bluebird skies and warm temps for the entire stay. Palmyra Peak, Dihedral Chutes, Gold Hill, and Black Iron Bowl were all skiing well for the duration of the trip. Definitely one of the best trips to a mining town in recent memory. Stoked! http://www.slaythegnar.com/2012/03/truckin-for-thrills-telluride-032412/

Given the current skiing status around the greater Lake Tahoe area, a quick decision was made to skip town and head to Telluride to find some snow over the Martin Luther King holiday. I have been frequenting Telluride almost yearly since 1998 and whether Winter or Summer, it is definitely a place that the whole family can enjoy...even for a stubborn father looking for some steeper turns. With amazing bluebird weather in the low 40s and total snowfall around 130 inches, it was the ideal weekend to ski with the kids and for dad to explore on the Ski School days. As far as terrain, everything was basically open except for the lines beyond Mountain Quail up to Palmyra and a few on the middle Gold Hill Chutes. The early morning groomers were fast and chalky with equally impressive views. At the end of the day, we really enjoyed lapping Revelation Bowl due to the ridiculous views of Bear Creek and the Wasatch Trail to the steep groomer of Silvercloud and the smooth windblown and fun cliffs near the Boundary. Other than that, some great meals, and the Telluride Fire Festival were icing on the cake to a perfect weekend on the slopes.
