John Szarke hitch-hiked to 40 countries in 1973-74. Starting in Buffalo Minnesota, he traveled through the U.S., Central America and South America, then worked on a cargo ship to earn passage to Europe. He traveled through most of the European countries, Yugoslavia and Hungary before heading back home to continue his education. He was 24 years old at the time and was able to survive on $3 a day. The title "A Neverending Happening of Unknown Factors" was pulled from Ken Welsh's 1971 book, A Hitch-hiker's guide to Europe. In it he claims "hitch hiking is a cumulative experience. A never ending happening of unknown factors travelling is all about. Not just the chance to say that you’ve been to a place but the feeling that at one time somewhere even for an instant you become a part of the land through which you travelled." This is a brief overview of John's experience incorporating slides and other images from his travels. Additional audio stories from John's travels https://soundcloud.com/mjohanning/close-call
