The very first proposal video made for THE ANGOLA PROJECT. An attempt to convince a group of producers we were in fact creating the performance project that would eventually become The Angola Project Trilogy : http://angola-project.com/ Created by Claudia Heu, Igor Dobricic and Jeremy Xido, The Angola Project playfully straddles the worlds of performance and film-making as the audience watches a movie being constructed from fragments of film and narrative right before their eyes, only to crumble again into disarray. A trilogy of solo performances playing with and tearing apart the tradition of Travel Lectures that emerged in the 19th century, The Angola Project leads the audience on a very personal journey into Xido's real-life attempts to finance a film and confront the truths of mortality. It is a dizzying expedition through the history of colonial Portugal, the Travelogues of Burton Holmes, the films of Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly, the Detroit race riots/rebellion, Berlin documentary film crews in Africa and the blood-thirsty mechanisms of international film finance. A funny and moving investigation into global events and the complex and often unexpected polycultural mash-up identities emerging in the 21st century. The Angola Project pushes the limits of story telling as desire and dream-making slams into the deadly realities of heartbreak.

An expedition through the history of colonial Portugal, the travelogues of Burton Holmes, the films of Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly, the Detroit race riots/rebellion, Berlin documentary film crews in Africa, and the blood-thirsty mechanisms of international film finance. The Angola Project is three-part solo performance, with the third part co-commissioned and produced during residencies at EMPAC. The performance is a fusion of film and narrative, tales and fragments, joining together and crumbling away. Having its roots in the tradition of travel lectures that emerged in the 19th century, CABULA6 invites the audience on a journey into Jeremy Xido’s real-life attempts to finance a film and confront the truths of mortality in the 21st century. TRACE… a unique theatrical experience with two integrated parts - An audio tour through the streets of New York 1919 and a performance in a New York theater 2008. Trace is a playful meditation on how memories and fantasies are constructed and lost. We look at the neurological phenomena that allow us to construct a "coherent" vision of the world out of the millions of bits of fragmented sensory and conceptual information we experience daily. Audio Tour: Every fifteen minutes two people set out at the same time from two different sites in the city. They walk in the footsteps of two characters from 1919. Their paths cross and diverge only to merge again, ending at the same table in a restaurant. Sign up and walk the tour led solely by a voice on a CD player. Duration: approx. 1 hour Performance: NYC, April 2008, an experimental neuroimaging chamber that allows access to the mind of a New York City bicycle messenger who underwent brain surgery after an accident in Columbus Park. We follow two doctors as they descend into the bottomless black well of the messenger\s memory - a place where nothing is as it seems, where the recent dead intermingle with past loves and where sea monsters roam the brittle ground. Der Standard "The marvelously quixotic attempt of an artist trying to figure out what he wants to say and how best to say it…The Angola Project, derives its structure and meaning from the disparate layers stacked up by Mr. Xido and then spread out to create a jostling collage, one that is intimate yet informed by sweeping issues surrounding class, race and identity." NY Times "A multidisciplinary performance series...revealing a vulnerable and magnetic personality." Dance Enthusiast "A wonderfully roundabout departure from traditional theater." Eye on Dance PART 2, "Angola" : delves deeper into Xido's quest to construct a feature film script as he travels to Angola along the Benguela Railway - currently being rebuilt by Chinese construction companies. Eye on Dance PART 1, "Lisbon": follows Xido's captivation by the city of Lisbon's sunset-timed gas lamps and growing idea for a feature film. He finds himself collecting historical tidbits, horticultural facts, twisting random encounters into fanciful story lines as he conducts a slew of interviews with the people he meets there. The stories begin to derail and travel from Europe to Africa to a Mulberry Tree in Detroit. PART 3: "XIN - Heart of the Matter" : is a work-in-progress of the creators' intent to produce a disastrous failure - maybe discovering something true and valuable among the ruins. Part 3 begins with a trip through the side of a mountain in Southern China...but not really. It actually begins with heartbreak and the end of story telling. It is an act of courting failure as perhaps the only way out, the only viable way into the future. XIN is an attempt to drop one's guard and just get to the very heart of the matter. www.angola-project.com

Macondo, on the outskirts of Vienna, is a settlement where successive waves of refugees fleeing global wars have reconstructed their lives for over 50 years. This autonomous area has grown without municipal support resulting in a district, impenetrable to outsiders, with few surfaced roads, streetlights, signs or street names. For decades these people fought for a bus stop to link their community with the city . Pinsky worked with the performance group Cabula and residents to chart out the area’s past, present and future. The resulting map has been mounted on a billboard within recently erected Bus Stop 73a. Those waiting for a bus can add new information; missing names, locations, graffiti and teenage declarations of love, thereby becoming the primary actors in a continually evolving exhibition, their additions being regularly reprinted into the plan.

[1] Originally, “Hair” is a title of a rock musical by James Rado and Gerome Ragni. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musical’s profanity, caused much comment and controversy. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of “rock musical” and inviting the audience onstage for a “Be-In” finale. [2] Opera is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work combining text (called a libretto) and musical score. Opera incorporates many of the elements of spoken theatre, such as acting, scenery, and costumes and sometimes includes dance. The word opera means “work” in Italian (it is the plural of Latin opus meaning “work” or “labour”) suggesting that it combines the arts of solo and choral singing, declamation, acting and dancing in a staged spectacle. [3] According to Aristotle, act-uality, in contrast to potentiality, is the motion, change or activity that represents an exercise or fulfillment of a possibility, when a possibility becomes real in the fullest sense.
