This is a reel time clip from Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms. It features an experimental part of the documentary where the score is brought forward in the timeline and the A/V track of the film "improvises" with the music. This segment parallels the Water Montage from earlier in the film where the score also moves to the front, but in a much more conventional way that does not disrupt the narrative flow established in the film. That the Beer Montage extends that devoted to Water is consistent with the relationship of water to beer in the real world of drinkers. This segment of the film is a true collaboration with Zack Lozier that goes a bit beyond what we did with the general score. The point is to dislink the narrative from Time. This embodies the timelessness of beer styles and reflects the many ways that the featured brewers respect history.

This is the first video made from the scraps of Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms. While creating that documentary about the impact of new beer distribution laws in MN from 2012 until 2014, there were a lot of video fragments that did not make it into the final cut. Some of these were more dear than others. There was a collection of prime scraps - the First Darlings - "darlings" in the sense of Q (Arthur Quiller-Couch) when he assured us that editing narrative work may require "murdering" the best bits from time to time and we must not shy from the task.. It was a series of deep cuts into what had once been prized that hacked the timeline down to 2 hours. The First Darlings were buried on a hard drive then dug up as fodder for this new video. The clip includes music by Wayne Sayres. I met Wayne during the Premiere of Crafted to Last in July 2014. where he and Emily put on an excellent light show. Bringing Wayne to contribute to a video recycled from the spent video gathered while making CTL is an example of the project is growing on itself. Growing in the direction portended by the semi-successful Campaign for Music in 2014. Garden Gnome Blues was an orphan from another project. I think we have found it a good home in The Darling Reprise.

First video from the Video Diary that I kept during the production of Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms. This is just a small taste of what was happening behind the scenes. It is an answer to the many people that have and continue to query as to my favorite beer, or favorite brewery. All of them have a place and a role in ensuring that every beer drinker can find a brew that satisfies them every day of the week. Yes, even Sunday.

At last. The consensus version of the Official Trailer for Crafted to Last Minnesota Beer Blossoms. You may recall that my editing partner, SpitBall, leaked an earlier version of the trailer just before the world premiere at the Parkway Theater on July 19, 2014. In all the hubbub around the release of the film in Minneapolis and Duluth (July 25), I've not had a spare moment to up-load the Real Official Trailer. That is, until now, the 3rd day since the last showing and here it is, back from the dead. That this version exists at all is a testament to the inseparability of myself from SpitBall. We've resettled our differences all over again. He is the Muse Whisperer that nudges my heart through my eyes and helps me focus on the missing edge of Vermeer's mirror. SpitBall and I generally work in tandem. We take turns at editing the film and discuss it internally in between bouts. The version that he "leaked" was the untouched timeline I had left him on the shared hard drive. This video is the result of SpitBall finally taking his turn in the suite. Of course he did what he always does. He distorted the time and mixed phrases around. I like to give SpitBall the final word because he always manages to leave the most intriguing part of the story unstated but not quite untold.

While the roll-out of Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms was in the initial stages I met with a friend. Over a beer and a handshake he suggested that the world premiere at the Parkway Theater be documented with video. I agreed then informed him that there was no feasible way for me to document an event that I was organizing, hosting and orchestrating in real time. Time lapse to the rescue. If you don't blink, you can see the entire film in this clip. The world premiere event, too. Condensed i time and set to muzak made by D. Okar with ACID.

At least 2 things distinguish this trailer from Zero, Beer Styles and the never completed or released Brewery Styles Trailer #3 for that matter. This one was created after making the film, at least the dialogue track, and it includes original music from the film. The dialogue track is the backbone of the documentary. Most of the effort in editing was in weaving all the voices together in a coherent narrative stream that would carry the listener through the film. Much of the time, I was editing the audio track with the video track turned off to better focus on the dialogue. In isolation, the spoken word narration can work as a radio piece because that is how it was made. The music track also carries the story line, or at least the time line, through the film. The work with Zack was a collaboration. He became familiar with the film, mostly the dialogue track, and I immersed myself in the first version of the score. I put the score into the film and made notes about how I thought it could be made a more perfect fit than already it was. Then we watched it together and talked about how the film was structured and which emotions and text we might attempt to emphasize, soften, or otherwise comment upon in the music track. Then he went away and later sent me the final score that is now a part of the film. The video track is the third component of film. Along with the dialogue and music, the images are aligned with the timeline of the piece. Time in film is fundamentally linear, even if the audio/visual content provides an illusion of non-linearity or timelessness. Frame by frame. That is how the whole thing is made to exist. Stringing words, music and pictures onto the timeline and cutting away the flash. Polishing this bit over here and letting this patch go rough. Maybe an experimental interlude or 2 just to keep viewers from becoming too complacent. A place where I can play for a moment and try to satisfy Todd Haug (Head Brewer at Surly Brewing Co.) when he says in the film, "put your stamp on it, a little more." He's talking about beer, but I get the drift as well as the draft.

The Series #2 glasses were delivered in May of 2014. I decided to try and make something of the packing in of the boxes. These are Willi Becher 16 oz beer glasses specially designed for the community funding campaigns run by CDDF Productions in support of the documentary film Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms. The music was created with ACID.

Short video made for the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest 2014. I organized a panel discussion highlighting Crafted to Last and emphasizing the continued growth in breweries and other businesses, as well as how the explosion of local beer has enhanced the MN beer culture. From composting spent grains and tending beer gardens to growing MN hop farms and expanding the brewing sector. We'll cover it all from a variety of perspectives and people. Russ Henry from Giving Tree Gardens, Amy Johnson from Northbound Smokehouse and Brew Pub, Ben Boo from Mighty Axe Hops, Melinda Hedberg from Barley's Angels MN, Paul Johnston from Day Block Brew Pub, and yours truly from CDDF Productions talk local economies, communities and hops. A large part of this clip was gleaned from the Video Compost Pile. Otherwise known as a folder where I store bits and pieces of A/V content that has been cut from the other projects. Spent video. Recycled here into something useful for starting a conversation between the people on the panel.
