When the economy collapsed many people lost everything they owned, which lead to riots and looting but also resulted in a lively barter trade. Tota Reciclados started making jewellery out of discarded materials and objects, giving them a second life. Recently, their interest has shifted from waste material to objects they are given by other people. In May and June of 2013, Tota Reciclados lived and worked in Studio Rian de Jong in Amsterdam, at the invitation of the Françoise van den Bosch Foundation. Valeria and Marcela combed the markets and shops of the Dutch capital for materials they could turn into jewellery. They also invited people to come to the studio and bring along personal objects. Fragments of old jewellery, bits of fabric, photos, illustrations and other memorabilia, things that lie around unused in kitchen drawers, nightstands and attics: these were the kinds of objects they were after. And not only the objects themselves; they wanted to know the stories behind the materials that neighbours, other artists and students brought them. Valeria and Marcela encouraged the donators to tell them these stories, because sharing and co-creation are important parts of their design process. The jewellery exhibited here is the result of improvisation, chance, lucky accidents, and serendipity. The jewels are bold, colourful, hybrid and can be anything from kitsch to folkloristic art. The exhibition focuses on the process of sharing objects, materials and stories, which resulted in the jewels that make up Broken Memories, Precarious Links.
