In 2007, just weeks before the beginning of the Maine shrimp season, the First Universalist Church of Rockland, with the help of fishermen from Port Clyde, took a leap of faith and created Maine’s first Community Supported Fishery program. Now in their third year, we sat down with church members Lucie Bauer and Diane Schetky to learn how their concern for environmental justice led from local farms to local fish.

http://amyfredman.com/ I practice an unusual form of “painting”, using simply a non-computerized home sewing machine. My intention is to approach the use of stitch placement from the perspective of a painter. With the careful distribution of sewn color gradients and layers, I am able to express depth and what appears to be color “mixing” as well as having the ability to achieve texture through directional changes and stitch strokes. This once practical tool used for handicrafts has now crossed the line as tool used for creating fine art. I emphasize that I do not use a computerized sewing machine because my goal is to create something a computer, or programmable machine, is not capable of. What motivates me is the fact that I am self taught in this discipline and I am consistently learning from my mistakes, whether they are happy or not. I enjoy the meditative focused process as well as the end product, where I never fail to surprise myself. This technique has been challenging for me to practice, but that is what keeps me working it and enjoying what I do. I also take pride in the fact that not many fine artists sew in this manner, so it is unique and interesting to look at as well as create.
