For the 5th Consecutive year, I had the pleasure of delivering opening comments on Day 3 at the Ri$kMinds Conference in Amsterdam on December 6th 2012. My presentation has traditionally consists of a roundup of key issues QRM's clients are facing from around the globe and then my review of the Ri$kMinds Conference topics and recounting of my favorite Quotes from the speakers. This year, I decided to inject a little relevant spectacle to the proceedings so I picked up on Andrew Haldane’s paper "The dog and the Frisbee" delivered back in August that spoke to complexity in the regulatory and supervisory process. I put his comments to the test and choreographed a series of Frisbee Moves to a listing of the qualities of a good risk manager. Showing that although risk management can be extremely complex (like Frisbee tricks), you don’t need to overcomplicate the process despite these complexities.

        • Charles Richard Present's "Implementing a Stress Testing Process" Key Issues and Challanges

Stress Testing has always been a focus for QRM going back to our founding in 1987. Today this concept has evolved to cross the traditional pillars of risk to include not only Interest Income and market risk but, liquidity, capital and risk adjusted profitability. Gone are the days when balance sheet projections were driven only by interest rates and exchange rates. Today, the focus is no "macro-drivers" such as housing prices, inflation, unemployment, GDP and others. This change has left many organizations struggling for the best way to implement such a program, facing the need to bring ALM, Finance and Risk together. Who is in charge? How can an organization ensure the proper team work with the inevitable culture clash and internal political struggles that often ensue? This presentation lays out the new requirement, covers the big issues and then presents a concrete example of how this can be done. Richard mixes technical knowledge, people knowledge and some humor in the process of delivering a must watch presentation on the topic.

It is very clear that a dramatic shift has taken place in the regulatory landscape. The focus has shifted decidedly to forward looking metrics that are based on stress tests, such as the CCAR and the DFAST. So how do you go about complying with these regulations while still adding value to your organization? What is the best approach - Top of the House, Bottoms up or a combination of both? This presentation lays out the challenges and gives one of the best 5 minute recap of the issues that I have heard to date. Play this for your team and forward it to your boss.
