A 1960s brutalist car park in Sydney’s CBD is transformed by a cocoon. The car park is wrapped with a new high tech, sustainable, lightweight, transparent facade. The cocoon makes minimal impact on the existing structure whilst improving building performance, seamlessly integrating a dynamic media wall and providing opportunities to activate the street level.

ok this may sound strange but we actually designed this stadium 7 years ago while at PTW with director Tony Thorp. The idea was to build a lightweight membrane stadium inspired by Qatari beduin architecture. It became very literal in the end but its kind of cool, the biggest tent ever! I havent heard much since till this press release: Qatar Unveils Designs for Second World Cup Stadium: http://dohanews.co/nomadic-tent-design-al-khor-world-cup-stadium-revealed/

Today’s indoor tennis venue should provide light, openness and atmosphere. The proposed tennis centre consists of two parts: a sunken ‘nest’ of concrete walls, vertical or slightly angled, sheathing the court layout and a light wooden shell above, composed of short elements in a reciprocal structure. It includes three game courts, practice facility, gymnasium, instruction rooms, and support services. Embedded into the landscape, the tennis venue becomes part of it, blurring the boundaries between building and nature. Slightly depressed within the enclosing environment reduces the surface area. The entire building is organised as a landscape within itself -everything is easily visible and open. All technical spaces are positioned at the edges of the courts and covered by grass roofs as a continuation of the landscape. Shells are highly efficient structural forms using a minimum amount of material, reducing both structure and cladding. The proposed reciprocal system consists of short, CNC produced elements that can be easily mounted and is clad by a highly efficient cladding material. A translucent membrane covers the main roof with north-oriented openings to provide a maximum amount of daylight and consistent light levels throughout. At night and during long winters the building will appear as a large, warm lantern. Using a design strategy of simultaneous control of many parameters, the future tennis dome will be a sustainable and efficient landmark, providing an exciting backdrop for future tennis action.

LAVA fused visionary geometries and forms with traditional elements of Persian culture in the design for the new Tehran Stock Exchange. The vision seeks to define a new typology for the next century, mixing virtual and human interaction. Past, present and future meet inside the exchange hall, where modern muqarnas, an interactive data dome and high-tech data screens work together in a tribute to Persian history and architecture. The office floors are filled with light and air, enjoy breathtaking mountain views and allow highly functional and flexible workspace layouts. The most advanced design technologies create a fully sustainable, flexible and unique public centre for the economy of the country, with a highly iconic identity. Inspired by the local morphology such as cave houses, the Stock Exchange is envisaged as an urban rock, smartly carved ovoid shapes enhance natural light, panoramic views, interior spaces and the relationship with the surroundings. An interior light void maximises fresh air and sunlight, whilst roof terraces add to the amenity of workers. The façade draws inspiration from the tessellation and light prisms of the local architecture, whilst a media façade broadcasts real time news and an intelligent skin responds to changing climatic conditions. LAVA has carved Tehran’s new city icon.
