Rust College welcomed students, friends, alumni and family members of the Class of 2010 for the 144th Commencement activities held April 24-25. The 136 graduates and their families participated in the Rust College commencement traditions such as the Consecration and tree planting. A reception was held for graduates, parents and alumni Friday evening, and students were given a rousing message during the Senior/Alumni breakfast held Sunday morning. Mrs. Fannie Lampley, ’69, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Institute of Community Services (ICS), Inc. spoke to students about pushing forward. “Don’t be a second-rate version of someone else, when you can be a first-rate version of yourself,” she said. Commencement speaker, Bishop Sally Dyck, of the United Methodist Church, Minnesota Annual Conference, also gave graduates something to think about. “Who are you going to be when you do what you do? What is your purpose-given life? Who are you?” Bishop Dyck challenged the graduates to answer these questions as they step into life after Rust College. During Senior Consecration held Saturday evening, April 24, Dr. David L. Beckley told graduates that even though they are leaving, Rust College will always be there. “From this day forth, you are Rust College men and women. You can’t divorce Rust… Wherever you shall rest, Rust will be there with you. Your experiences at Rust College, we hope have inspired you to accept the challenge. God will lead you as you face your challenges.” “Graduates of 2010, you are made to walk the high roads of human creativity, love, excellence and justice,” Dr. Beckley said. “To reach for anything other than the highs, the best… is to separate ourselves from the moral order.” Also recognized during Commencement were Dr. Mehdi Moghbel and Mrs. Sharon Goodman-Hill. Dr. Moghbel received the Higher Education Appreciation Day-Working for Excellence (HEADWAE) Award given by the Mississippi State Legislature.  Mrs. Sharon Goodman-Hill was the recipient of the Exemplary Teacher Award, sponsored by the United Methodist Church. According to Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Sheila Flemming-Hunter, both Goodman-Hill and Moghbel were chosen for their “excellence in teaching, incorporation of technology in instruction, internal and external funded research, and memberships in scholarly and learned societies.”
