L'Eveil (the awakening) Noun. 1. An act of waking from sleep. 2. An act or moment of becoming suddenly aware of something, the beginning or rousing of something. Adjective. Coming into existence or awareness Consistently questioning what is socially acceptable, L'Eveil deals with the themes of Growth, Transformation, Beauty and Disfigurement. The uniqueness of the piece arises from the indivisibility of performer, sculptural costume and movement challenging the distortion of the body and its place in society. It pushes the boundaries of costume and grows further the integral role of the costume as the centre of the performance instead of its typically established simple decorative role. The costume is created not around a character or an idea but through the relationship between body, material, movement and observer, creating a strong visual dynamic. Short-listed for the New Zealander international costume Art competition World of Wearable Art in 2010, the costume is entirely made of hemp and hand dyed using Shibori techniques. Director/ Costume Designer: Mona Kastell Performer: Mazz Marsden Sound design: Guy Veale Lighting design: Alberto Santos Bellido Filmed & edited by Tomas Sheridan (Polifilm)

For more examples of my films please visit my website: julianlangham.co.uk This performance is an improvisation based on an original dance work called Primitive. Primitive was created and performed by choreographer Dane Jeremy Hurst. Primitive was inspired as a response to Dane witnessing an act of violence against a woman on the streets of London. Caught between fear and a primal urge to react, the dance piece examines the struggle of emotions raging inside the observer of such brutality.
