This year was the first time I was invited to present a workshop at an Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Career Conference. I worked with approximately 50 girls ages 10-12 to make ice cream. Before or after the experiment, the girls were asked to draw a scientist. These are the results, digitized using an Epson Perfection V30 flatbed scanner. Women scientists that have been an inspiration to me can be found in the 2010 American Association for the Advancement of Science publication UNESCO-L’ORÉAL For Women in Science International Fellowships at http://sciencecareers.sciencemag.org/sites/default/files/loreal-2010.pdf. Another great resource for female role models in STEM can be found in Goddard Women Highlighted at Maryland Women's Heritage Center http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/pdf/613199main_WomenOfGoddard_Poster5_Aqua.pdf. Our results from April 5, 2014 EYH Conference at Mount St. Mary's College were compared with data from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and national studies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draw-a-Scientist_Test). It is clear that the EYH conference inspires girls to see themselves as scientists!
