Surfers Point Margaret River, 31 Oct – 2 Nov 2008 The annual Margaret River Classic was held at Surfers Point with epic conditions for the 3 days of competition. A tough field of surfers including the Billabong team from the east coast and a cast of local stars made the most of the clean, 4-6ft swell and the standard of surfing was the best the competition has seen. Margaret River local Tom ‘the wrecking ball’ Innes took out the Open Men’s title for a second time, remaining undefeated for the entire competition and claimed best wave in the process. In second place and putting up a powerful performance was the East Coast’s Dylan Longbottom, followed closely by Paul ‘Antman’ Patterson and Sam Wrench. The Pro Junior final was slow to start with East Coaster Matt Hewitt raising the level of surfing and forcing the WA boys to step up. A high scoring first wave sealed the deal for Shaun Howe with Matt Hewitt second, Zac Ogram third and Jerome Forrest fourth. Felicity Palmateer won the Open Womens division with an outstanding performance, taking out best wave as well. Bec Sheedy Ryan came second with Merome Lumsdane third and young Bronte Macaulay fourth. Local surfboard shaper and ex world number two Dave Macaulay performed well enough in the Over 40’s to take out the Open division but didn’t get the chance to try his luck at the double win. Dave Chick came second with commentator Mark Clift third and Glen Dalbock fourth. World-renowned free surfer Dino Adrian took out the locals division with a stylish display of surfing, in second was Andrew Sheridan, followed by Jake Jackovich and Rohan Annersley. Encouragement awards went to two promising grommets Jackson Chadwick and Mikaila Green. Trigg surfer Luke Cambell scored best tube adding to the success he has been experiencing this year on the WQS and local surfer ‘Dougie’ had a controversial win in the paddle race using an 8ft foamie.
