Kidspace had a vision of creating an environment to inspire science learning through self-directed, interactive experiences and play—and they wanted to do it outdoors. With this idea and an empty half-acre, Kidspace chose Hands On! to grow their vision into reality. Working with Kidspace board member and CalTech astrophysicist Dr. Mike Brown, Hands On! created an iconic outdoor exhibition like no other. The Galvin Physics Forest offers a captivating, kinetic learning environment that encourages science experimentation through the lens of play. The exhibition is a wondrous mix of the natural and the manmade, with each exhibit beautifully integrated into a custom landscape of native plants that invites exploration, relaxation and interaction. Wheels roll, rockets blast and balls fly as families experiment with the forces that define the shape of our world. The result? Visitors are joyfully building confidence and capability in science, and Kidspace is seeing record-breaking attendance.

Here, an industrial blower reduces the air pressure above a clear piston, and the pressure of the ambient air becomes enough to lift a seated visitor upward several feet. The emphasis is on making active parts apparent to the visitor and helping them understand what is happening. The cylinder is approx. 46" in diameter, and the "piston" is clear Lexan allowing full view of the exhibit's function from below the exhibit. The blower itself and its hose are mounted to the side of the exhibit in a fun way so that visitors can make a connection between it and what is happening inside the cylinder. The chair assembly sits inside a gated enclosure; the chair only operates when the gate is closed properly. The chair itself is dune-buggy style and made for one person only. A seatbelt on the chair must be latched for it to operate. The visitor also need to hold both control buttons down to operate the chair. The top of the piston assembly is linked to the "Lift" area sign, causing the sign to rise up and lower with the action of the chair.

Coordinated by Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition and Centralina Council of Governments, the EV Challenge was hosted by Discovery Place as part of the Museum’s ongoing efforts to help students of all ages understand how to use science to solve real-world problems. Planning for the exhibit was supported by Advanced Energy, Ampmobile Conversions, the North Carolina Plug‐In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Taskforce, NC State University and the Advanced Transportation Energy Center (ATEC), and media partner WBTV. The program would not be possible without the students and faculty advisors from McMichael High School in Mayodan, NC and Phillip O. Berry Academy in Charlotte, NC.
