As I try to get more and more from the Sony A7S, I learn more and more. And I've found that using Kholi's modified PRO picture profile, slog2 as the gamma, and use filmconvert in post that you can get beautiful results. The big secret I feel is to use s log2 on the camera and the color matrix of PRO, not S GAMUT. Thanks to Kholi, he lead me to better color thru the pro matrix, even though the other pro sony video cameras use s gamut. Much more pleasing than the S gamut color setting in terms of skin tone and saturation. Here's the cooking ingredients to put into the menu: Slog2 PicPro from Kholi - Black Level: 0 Gamma Slog: 2 Black Gamma > Range: Middle , Level: -3 Knee > Mode: Auto , Auto Set > Max Point: 95 , Sensitivity: Mid Colore Mode: Pro Saturation: +8 Color Phase -2 Color Depth > R+1, G-1, B+2,, C-2, M-1, Y-3 Detail > Level, -5 Adjust > Mode; Manual, V/H Balance: -2, B/W Balance Type3, Limit: 0, Crispening:0, hi_light Detail: 0 White balance > Manual > Grid setting B 1 (one to the left) You don't have to follow it perfectly, but overall it can get to some stunning results. And the secret to any log recording is post. And I'm the biggest fan of the Film Convert program to process the film - http://www.filmconvert.com. This is my secret weapon. Download and play with the different camera profiles. Then save the new files. I used Film Convert Arri Alexa Log C profile for grading. FilmConvert setting is Arri Alexa as the camera. logC. film stock is Fuji Film 8543 Vivid. color 93. curve 100. size 35mm full frame. grain 0. it can be a little too punchy in places, but overall gives a nice creamy look. the banding is interesting. it doesn't really bother me too much. I think shooting to 4:2:2 on the external recorders will help with this. The whole 8 bit vs 10 bit thing isn't as big of a deal as most people think. I've used 8 bit for so long and have graded fine off of it. 10-bit is a modern camera thing! I like it better than the sony f55 lut fiilmconvert has - has more creaminess. When you go to edit, remember to add some pretentious classical music. And a sunset shot! That's pretty much it - it's pretty simple to make this camera shine - and I'm excited more and more to see everyone's results. Please ask me some more questions! Lets make the imagery out of your new camera as good as we can! I really believe in this camera.

The second in a series of city symphonies. First, New York (www.vimeo.com/51875528). Third, Seattle (www.vimeo.com/66702557). "In the the 1920s the movies were still relatively young, and an evolving modernist aesthetic embraced all things new, sleek, fast, and urban. Not surprisingly, a common focus of the cinematic avant-garde during this era was on the power, and excitement of cities. In both Europe and the US, a small genre of films that became know as 'city symphonies' attempted to capture the spirit, uniqueness, and poetry of a city by assembling images of everyday life in that city. These early films and their offsprings often utilized what film historian Bill Nichols has termed the 'poetic mode' of documentary film production--an attempt to move away from the 'objective' reality of a given situation or people in order to grasp at an inner 'truth' that can only be conveyed by poetical manipulations of mood, tone, time, and space." -University of California Berkeley Media Resources Center Festivals/Awards: WINNER National Young Arts Foundation Merit Award 2014 OFFICIAL SELECTION Seattle International Film Festival 2013 FutureWave Shorts Program OFFICIAL SELECTION Bay Area Youth Media Network Festival 2013 OFFICIAL SELECTION Catalina Film Festival Film + TV Market FINALIST FilmConvert Cinematography Competition 2013 Music: Take Five by Dave Brubeck. Shot on Location in Forchheim, Bavaria, Germany. I used the new Carl Zeiss Compact Zooms 28-80 2.9 and 70-200 2.9. Great zoom lenses, noticed nearly no focus and zoom shift. Everything shot within 3 hours on the Red Epic at 5K / 95fps. Be sure to download the 4K file here on Vimeo. So much better and less compression. Edited in 5K natively. Software was Adobe Premiere CS6 and Film Convert. Added Grain with this tool, as I wanted to get a very organic look! Worked out pretty well and fast w/ Film Convert.
