Oliver Jeffers is a world-famous creator of picture books for children, such as the award-winning Lost and Found. With his captivating paintings, collages, installations, and collaborative works—presented in his first monograph Neither Here Nor There—Jeffers also tells deeply incisive stories and poses provocative philosophical questions. Gestalten.tv met him in the wake of the opening of his current exhibition HERE OR THERE at Gestalten Space to learn about kids as critics, the art of storytelling, and, of course, quantum physics. The Brazilian artist Stephan Doitschinoff has developed a unique and deeply symbolic visual language comprising iconoclastic and folkloric elements. His paintings, sculptures, installations, and public performances provide glimpses into another political and philosophical dimension. His recently published second monograph CRAS includes impressive close-ups that capture the detail and complexity of his new work as well as a specially developed series of illuminated texts. We met him at Heri, Hodie, Cras, his first solo show in Berlin, which features canvases, drawings, multiples and a limited edition ceramic sculpture incorporated into a mixed-media installation. The exhibition “Heri, Hodie, Cras” runs until October 14th at Gestalten Space news.gestalten.com/event/heri-hodie-cras The book http://shop.gestalten.com/cras.html See photos from the event bit.ly/OkmOH5 More videos on www.gestalten.tv

In an image-saturated world, British collage artist John Stezaker rather creates more with less. Cutting up yesterday photographs, subtracting pieces, and juxtaposing faces, he transforms forgotten photographs and postcards into symbolic portraiture of modernism. Stezaker’s artistic interests in examining hidden relations between images have bestowed international success and recognition upon him and his collage art. Gestalten.tv had a precious opportunity to speak with the artist at his exhibition in Berlin’s Capitain Petzel Gallery. Featured in the exhibition The Age of Collage, his topical work is now on display at Gestalten Space in Berlin until January 12, 2014. The accompanying book of the same title also takes an insightful behind-the-scenes look at those working with this interdisciplinary and cross-media approach. In his current exhibition SPLITTER at Gestalten Space, the young Berlin-based artist Clemens Behr creates site-specific works that are delightfully disorienting with their complex layers and improvised compositions. By laying with both construction and destruction, Behr raises questions about ephemerality and permanency, and in the same way, his installations facilitate a dialog between our perceptions in the second and third dimensions. In this Gestalten.tv interview, the artist reflects on his visions in spatial design, his own visual vocabulary, and his free-spirited, performance-like design process. Don't miss SPLITTER at Gestalten Space, until August 4th. The masterful paintings of American artist Dan Witz transform everyday subjects into intimate hyper-realistic depictions of the banalities of life, allowing us to suspend our disbelief long enough to enter the fascinating world of art. Rooted in New York's punk rebellion, culture jamming, and the scary urban blight since the early eighties, this Brooklynite is not only a painter and street artist, but also a musician in the 1980s. His works have been exhibited in galleries throughout Europe and the US. In Gestalten.tv's latest feature, Witz sheds a light on Bar Shrines, Lamps and Other Paintings of Light, his first solo exhibition at Gestalten Space in Berlin, and why he rather likes his spectacular street art to serve a conscious purpose than to merely brand an ego. The suggestion that “tattoos are not just for sailors any more” is a familiar one. It might be surprising to learn, then, that the popular media has been reporting the arrival of tattooing in high society for nearly one hundred years. To celebrate the release of “Forever: The New Tattoo”, Gestalten hosted an evening of informative and entertaining talks by renowned tattoo artists Alex Binnie and Duncan X, as well as by heavily tattooed art historian Matt Lodder, author of the book’s preface. Further tattoo protagonists, namely Jon John, Liam Sparkes and Zoe Binnie, attended the event at the Gestalten Space in Berlin and gave us additional insight.
