poetry Kostis Palamas music Lucas Thanos singer Penelope Sergounioti OST 'The Flight of the Swan', by Niko Tzima footage by various artists location: Greece Monolithos (Greek: Μονόλιθος) is a Greek village on the island of Rhodes, South Aegean region, belonging to the municipal unit of Attavyros. It is located 10 km south-east of Apolakkia and 30 km from Prasonisi. Outside the village is the Venetian Castle, built on top of a 100m rock. This castle was built in 1480 by the Knights of Saint John to protect the island from attacks. In fact, this castle was never conquered. The Castle of Monolithos is widely ruined today but it offers great views of the sea and the two islets opposite to it. Inside the Castle, there are two chapels that are no longer used. Access to the castle is by a staircase cut into the rock. (http://www.voidokilia.com/paliokastro/00_Paliokastro-Story-EN.htm) *** The Medieval Castle of Pandeli in Leros: The Castle of Pandeli is a strong Medieval fortress overlooking the capital of Leros. It is also known as the Castle of our Lady, which means the Castle of Virgin Mary. Over the years, this Byzantine fortress, that survives well till today, has become the trademark of the island. The Castle gives a great view to the above mountainous landscape, the sea and the villages of Leros island. The Castle of Pandeli was probably built in the 10th century on the site if an ancient acropolis and, in the end of the 11th century, it was donated from the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I to the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos. During the Frankish times, the Castle was reinforced by the Knights of Saint John and was used to protect the island and its inhabitants from invasions. In the centuries that followed, the Castle served as a look out post for the Turkish, Italian and German conquerors of the island. As a result, it suffered a lot of damage. Today, three circuit walls of the castle are preserved and a church of our Lady stands on the west side of the castle. The church has a magnificent icon and fine wall paintings can be admired. To go to the Castle, you have to climb up a rough road or 400 steps from Pandeli. It faces the Halikarnassos Castle situated just opposite on the Turkish coasts with which it collaborated to control the strategic straits between Kos and Turkey. The Castle was built by the Knights of St-John of Jerusalem who ruled on the island from 1314 to 1512. The Castle was initially built on an island and it's entrance is situated at the Square of the Hippocrates Plane Tree, where a bridge crosses the Palm Tree Avenue which used to be a Moat until the beginning of the 20th century. The inner Keep was built around the 14th century while the outer Keep dates from the end of the 15th/beginning of the 16th century. Between the two keeps there is a moat and the entrance to the Inner Keep is a sloping bridge. It was built in the early 1220s by the Crusader rulers of the Principality of Achaea as their main stronghold, and is perhaps the finest fortification of the early period of Frankish rule in Greece preserved in the country today. The castle is located on a small plateau 226 metres (741 ft) above sea level, and comprises a central hexagonal keep, built around an inner courtyard and containing two-storeyed halls along its entire length, and complemented by an outer wall enclosing an outer yard on its western side. The castle is largely preserved in its original 13th-century state, with only minor later modifications for the installation of artillery. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlemoutsi) *** In the northest part of the west coast of the Peloponnese, lies the great fortress of Methoni. In the small peninsula, that was already fortified from ancient times, there has always been a city, renown for its harbour. It has been identified to the city Pedasus that Homer mentions under the name "ampeloessa" (of vine leaves), as the last of the seven"evnaiomena ptoliethra", that Agamemnon offers Achilles in order to sumdue his rage. This is a song I wrote and recorded with some wonderful Greek musicians, Achilleas Persidis on the guitars and lute, Yiorgos Fakanas on the bass, Nikos Kapilidis on drums and Alfred Shtuni on the violin. (well, he's not Greek but what does it matter?) This is the reason why I love music anyway, it flows over the borders.. Lyrics ..."if love becomes a boat midsea, don't expect it to return, it doesn't remember the route back..." Jim Zogas created the video using original footage from his summer wanderings in the Aegean, using Canon 550D magic lantern. Thank you for listening and if you enjoyed there's more of my songs on the internet!. Georgia Grammatikou
