'Parramatta Road' is a four minute animation that traces the evolution of the notorious Parramatta Road strip from the time of European settlement in 1788, through to the present. As well as being the oldest road in colonial'Australia, this pathway was an Aboriginal songline. The piece was produced with SydneyCENTRAL as a commission for IMROC (Inner Metropolitan Region of Councils), a joint governmental and private enterprise body that was formed to carry out a master plan for the Parramatta Road strip. The resulting master plan acknowledges that Parramatta Road is a cultually complex and car-dominated strip that people and communities are largely alienated from. One of the central tenets of the master plan is to change the pace of the road, to make it human and dynamic, and to bring communities which how have their backs to the road back on to the road, a concept that I tried to bring out in the animation. By bringing 6 historical images of Parramtta Road to life using animation, this piece documents the physical and psychological impact of urbanisation over the last 220 years. I attempt to transport people to a space that allows them to recognise the sacredness of the land and open them up to the possibility of positive change in the future on this often stigmatised road.
