This video was taken by the crew of Expedition 29 on board the International Space Station. The sequence of shots was taken October 15, 2011 from 03:42:54 to 03:52:36 GMT, on a pass from just west of San Francisco, California over the Pacific Ocean to the southern tip of the Hudson Bay. The video begins as the ISS is just west of San Francisco flying northeast. The coastal lights distinguish the land and water here. The pass continues northeast toward Wyoming and North Dakota, before crossing over into Canada. From here, the Aurora Borealis is seen, with an interesting looking angle from underneath the lights. A blanket of clouds cover Manitoba and Ontario as the ISS tracks closer to the Northern Lights. Here's a quick time-lapse of the ISS passing overhead on 28th may 2009. By chance i also got a plane zipping through on an almost identical course, and there's also another satellite in the first few frames. download the 1080p version for pin-sharp starry goodness.

At 5:46 a.m. EDT, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS) was installed successfully on the outside of the International Space Station's right side. Mission Specialists Andrew Feustel and Roberto Vittori used the space shuttle’s robotic arm to extract it from Endeavour's payload bay. They handed it off to the space station’s Canadarm2, and Pilot Greg Johnson and Mission Specialist Greg Chamitoff then used the robotic arm to install AMS on the starboard side of the station’s truss. The time lapse sequences are photographs taken by the crew of expeditions 28 and 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October in 2011. Each sequence covers the Middle East from a different direction with Jerusalem as the centerpiece. The photos were taken from http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov thanks to NASA. I edited them with minimal color grading to clean up the digital noise and then cropped them to widescreen aspect ration 2.55:1 (1836x720) to cut the Space Station out of the shots. My favorite region of the earth from space is the Nile River at night. It's gorgeous.
